FiveTen Studio will be hosting a Opening Reception for our new show (n) BODY, showcasing the work of Monique D. Lopez. (n) BODY will be on from October 9 through until November 16.

This is what Monique D Lopez says about her work...

Mikhael Bahktin describes the grotesque body as "a body in the act of becoming. It is never finished, never completed; it is continually built, created, and builds and creates another body." Throughout my practice there has been a a continuous metamorphosis - a transformation that has continued from one "body" of work to the next. Like Bahktin's grotesque body, certain aspects in the work inform each other as to what change needs to be taken to create the next "body."

For this exhibition, different "bodies" of work will be presented that possess the dualities of contained /uncontained, revealed/unrevealed, and internal/external. As site specific installation will be created that will consider the architecture of the gallery, specifically the windows. Here I will be able to experiment with the transparency of the windows and make a new "body" that will bring the outside in and the inside out.

FIVEten Studio has completely renovated and redesigned another storefront space in Old Oakland, Miel Tequila Bar, the new expansion of Tamarindo Antojeria.

Miel is designed for now, but with features of an old school flavor of Mexico and Oakland's early American architecture. The combination of all these seemingly differently elements blend well together without any one element outshining the other. Hard surfaces of the exposed brick walls, tin ceiling, and classic parquet floors are all traces of the classic American architecture in Old Oakland. The metal light fixtures designed by FIVEten Studio above the bar and in the center of Miel were taken from cues of Tequila, as is the pink divider wall and green couch. The unique texture of the plastered walls also causes one to think of adobe walls.

All in all, the food at Tamarindo is off the chain, and the drinks from Miel are too. Miel has the perfect atmosphere for lounging with some friends for a few drinks or even a date. And don't forget there's always happy hour.

Monique D. Lopez is a 2010 MFA graduate from CCA. An image of a microscopic cancer cell is what first intrigued her interest in the investigation of disease. It was saturated with color and she questioned how something deadly could be beautiful. In the work's development she takes into consideration the beauty she saw in the microscopic image and the grotesque effects of cancer’s invasiveness, such as tumors, and attempt to bring those things together in order to
have the viewer be attracted and repulsed simultaneously. Her intent is not to literally depict a disease, but rather have the work be a presence in the space—an invasive entity.

34 year-old artist Nicole Buffett currently works and resides in San Francisco, creating abstract pieces in both traditional and non-traditional mediums. Using reclaimed house paint, earth pigment, spices, sand, spray paint, ink, and resin, Nicole reflects her own relationship to the world around her while offering the possibility for deeper spiritual representation to the viewer. A lifelong painter and creator, Nicole was awarded the opportunity to work and study textile design in Rajashtan, India in 2001 and received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2004. Since then she been shown in prominent local establishments such as Swallowtail, Mignonne, Hotel des Artes, and the Andrea Shwartz Gallery.

Vintage sequins have been Giovanna's signature material since 2000, suspended on steel wire they provide continuous movement while revealing their sculptural and aerial quality. Since 1994, Robert Gonzalez has been the principle of R.A.G.E., a furniture manufacturing firm. R.A.G.E.'s primary business was office furniture. The award winning Global Desk System has furnished offices from the likes of MTV Networks, Oxygen Media, Nine West Group, Liz Claiborne, Action World, Monsanto Co., Monterey Carpet, Richard Chamberlain Communications and Wilson Media Group.

In 2002, R.AG.E. evolved into creating custom residential furniture. That quickly led to designing interiors and contracting apartment renovations. Several of these interiors are featured in the Design/ Build Portfolio.

Ollin: A Spiral Line and Other Flights by Rosa de Anda

"This exhibition explores rhythmic, ritualistic effort and the recurring themes of movement, flight and fluidity. Ollin means ‘movement’ in the Meso American language of Nahuatl. The spiral is representative of the force of regeneration and is recognized in most cultures as a universal sacred symbol.

Love and hatred, ignorance and wisdom find balance in the spiral dance of life. This work is about examining structure + pattern + rhythm, the interruption of such, nuturing new ways of being, investigating all activity within the whorls of the life spiral. The materials I use to construct this visual investigation, rubber and wood, are from the tree…an element of nature that is life-giving. I feel strongly about using these recycled materials, allowing for another pattern of existence to emerge in present space and time."

The Bachelor is named for its rich hues and sleek lines: think dark leather sofas and black Ferraris. It is constructed around a central piece of solid walnut burl, and has solid ebonized walnut legs. Its armboards are solid Gabon ebony, as are the decorative strips on top. The freestanding motor pod houses a new Premotec motor, and it is currently running with a vintage VPI PLC motor controller.

A unique feature of this table is that its armboards are installed using a single bolt, fixed from above. This design allows multiple armboards that can be installed in seconds.

Joel Scilley creates custom turntables from vintage and new parts incorporating his love for burlwood and other uncommon woods.

Julia Goodman is an artist and papermaker, living and working in San Francisco. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, she received her Bachelors in International Relations and Peace and Justice Studies from Tufts University in 2001. Julia spent six years in the Los Angeles area working at non-profit arts organizations and teaching at a dropout
recovery high school. She has exhibited at galleries and museums throughout California and is currently pursuing her Masters of Fine Arts at the California College of Arts.

In tell-tales, Julia Goodman experiments with the narrative potential of tracking wind through sculpture and photography. A tell-tale is both a literary and nautical term. Handmade paper sculptures track air circulating and movement. The pieces are all made from gathered junk mail repurposed with the intentions of telling a more personal and open story. With photographic assistance from Klea McKenna, this investigation travels on to film to capture an immediate and phenomenological experience of wind.

Yves Rossy Flies Over the English Channel

It was amazing enough back in 2003 when Yves Rossy began his Flying Man project and jumped out of a plane with stubby wings strapped to his back. On September 26, 2008, he truly over exceeded this achievement with his Jet-Man project and crossed the English Channel in just 10 minutes.

The final design was equipped with two kerosene-powered jet engines, foldable carbon wings and handles for easier manipulation. With this new design, Rossy had the freedom to glide or dive and became the first man to fly like a bird. Rossy leaped from a plane, fired up his jets and made the 22-mile trip from Calais, France, to Dover, England, for the solo flight.

The work of Christine Kesler speaks about themes of expansion and contraction, looking and the desire for perfect forms. Sometimes entire suites of drawings explore the dynamics and relationships of a single form or a small family of forms. Her abstractions are sourced from the body and the landscape, often distilling vast spaces or structures down to a much more spare and concise interpretation on panel or paper. There is an economy of visual language and a definitive casualness in her markmaking, as well as the examination of balance, tension, and integrity of material. The forms that recur in all of her work are evidence of the constant negotiations with the phenomenology of being human. She is interested in all of the ways that things (such as abstract forms) can exist together in vast difference but still somehow on the same spectrum as everything surrounding them, inseparable opposites. The work of Pablo Neruda and Forrest Hamer are influential for meditations on economy of language, relative duality and soulfulness.

"In selecting work for this show, one of the interpretations of Inseparability that was most compelling is in works dealing with the continuous emergence of the ordinary. One’s daily routine is inseparable from and constantly converges with an art practice that aims towards something more powerful and transcendent. Running parallel, there is also a theme of inseparability of one’s interior and exterior bodies... with the physical self as a subject, these artists are questioning how we are physically contained and ultimately held separately from one another, in constant negotiations with other physical bodies." - Christine Kesler

Jordan Felling addresses materiality and femininity with works that directly evoke a pregnancy of form. These richly layered abstractions of the human body suggest unto themselves fertility and a quiet space containing the female body, layered with light and shadow. There is also a quiet mental space created in the elegance of these platinum prints.

William Downs’ multi-headed erotically charged forms inhabit a space that seems to exist somewhere on a blurry line between fantasy and reality. These lush drawings deal with imagery culled from conscious and unconscious desires, two inseparable forces that equally drive the work.

Justin Limoges’ line drawing takes on the idea of inseparability of spirit and body through its depiction of a ripped-open torso. Presenting a graphic departure from Caravaggio’s painting of the wounded body in Doubting of Thomas, his work is brimming with the anxiety of war, doubt and spiritual reckoning.

Nick Meyer’s photographs and Brooke Inman’s drawings all have a distinctly experiential frame of reference that threads through their entire body of work, as they record moments in their everyday life and days spent with friends and lovers. These seemingly benign or carefree moments turn into the impetus for making their work, and add up to a greater whole that addresses the inseparability of one’s non-art practices with one’s art-making endeavor. Meyer’s photographs are inhabited by a child-like wonder, with adult kids climbing trees and diving into lakes. It feels like summer in each of his photographs in this exhibition, and the adult kids are playing more towards the kid end of the spectrum until school starts again.

Inman’s drawings and installations are filled with an obsessive mindfulness of the details that make up one’s routine: the banal (the clothes worn on a weekend) to the extraordinary (the wistfulness of falling in love). Inman’s drawings are as well filled w/ a child-like personal narrative- the sensations she describes are hopeful and she captures a sense of gratefulness and reverence in witnessing her own life happening around her.

The narrative that emerges from Zoe Blackwell’s delicately marked-up picture plane often has to do with trust and a highly personal belief system. Her texts are sparse, optimistic and incredibly poetic, and give a sense of the artist’s spelling-out of her own ideology.

Dina Danish’s relationship with the world around her is portrayed in constant tension with language barriers and various cultural uncertainties. She uses repetitive texts and her own parameters and recording systems to create works of art that seem to exist in distinct harmony with a disjointed and perhaps entirely unpredictable lifestyle, one that reflects a dissolving of boundaries between art and life.

We believe that the bikes are another form of Graffiti or even a form of functional art, or some can say a furniture piece. These bicycles project bueaty and zen in its pure form. Our goal is to showcase the bikes as another piece of furniture in your home.

It's movements mimic that of various animals with a control system that allows it balance, steer, and navigate. The coral like forms with their tropical colors just popped as you passed by the gallery windows in the evening. The New Industrial Revolution

This Dynamic Tower created by architect Dr. David Fisher is the first rotating skyscraper to be self powered and completely prefabricated. This amazing feat of architecture and engineering will revolutionize the way we build and live. Between each rotating floor is a wind turbine allowing it to generate energy for itself as well as for other nearby structures.

“Today's life is dynamic, so the space we are living in should be dynamic as well, adjustable to our needs that change continuously, to our concept of design and to our mood, buildings will follow the rhythms of nature, they will change direction and shape from spring to summer, from sunrise to sunset, and adjust themselves to the weather, buildings will be alive. From now on, buildings will have four dimensions, the fourth dimension is ‘Time' to become part of architecture”

The first rotating tower will be constructed in Dubai and the second in Moscow with plans to build the third in New York. Rotating Tower Technology Company, headed by the Dynamic Architecture Group, announced the opening on June 24 of the reservations list for the first Dynamic Tower in Dubai.

Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist who has been creating new forms of life that feed only on wind. These kinetic sculptures walk the sandy beaches fueled by wind captured in recycled plastic bottles acting as a stomach containing potential energy.

"Since 1990 I have been occupied creating new forms of life.

Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic material of this new nature. I make skeletons that are able to walk on the wind, so they don’t have to eat.

Over time, these skeletons have become increasingly better at surviving the elements such as storms and water and eventually I want to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives."

Curtis Arima recieved his BFA in Jewelry/Metal Arts & Ceramics from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA and graduated with high disctinction. He went on to earn his MFA in Metalsmithing from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He as been an Artist in Residence at both the California College of Arts and Crafts and Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Maine.

"The world of over consumption and disposability we throw away the old or damaged rather reconsider its future utility. The "Transformed Adornment" series attempts to question ideas about value and materiality; Transforming (or destroying) by embellishing while celebrating its past. The objects' adornment grows out of the pieces linking them back to their decorative historical motifs of acanthus.

These pieces try to find beauty in the overlooked and under appreciated through representation in metal, while being a reminder of the chaos that can occur when one does not temper ideologies."

'I attempt to create a visual experience both personal and social. My process begins as an exploration of the qualities inherent in found objects and develops as a self-referential posturing between the work and my experience. Working with materials is like an interview of sort - an inner dialogue about identity, form and creative ability. I find mark-making to be an exercise in observation and self investigation. Repetition is a common element in my work. It honors process, documents time, and is a method to finding a personal rhythm.

My inspiration lives in an interdependent world where dream and day-to-day life interplay. Bringing idea to form confirms that our humanness is our ability to make ideas visible. I find comfort in practicing that. I often call upon my staple materials; cast wax, metals,things like hairbrushes or animal bones to stir the intuitive unconscious. I am forever utilitarian considering new mediums and examining the possibilities around me.
